advice on manouvering handle repair

My recent purchase Windrush 15/2 S has one manouvering handle at the front with no screws in the central support plate.
I tried inserting part of a match assuming the hole had been enlarged but they seemed to go into a void.
what are the handles mounted onto, assumed a wooden frame?
Any advice please.
